Reading about a guy I met
in Indonesia at a surf resort, I met Clay Marzo, said to be one of the best young surfers in the world. He was with a girl but painfully shy. Reading the ESPN story on him today I find out why. He has mild Asperger’s Syndrome. That explains alot. The guy can shred the waves like no one I have seen.

Cost of Oil, gas totally bogus for surfers
I could not agree more. The cost of surfboards has doubled. My drive to Westport used to cost $80 round trip now costs over $200. I might as well fly to Hawaii. Hey, now that is not a bad idea.

just bought the Jimi
I don't like wallets. I usually just fold my money over my credit cards. lately i have had a brookstone money clip wallet, but feel bad that it is made in china from unsustainable cows. So I just bought a Jimi wallet. Cheap, plastic, and recycled. cool colors as well. just the basics man. I am worried that it might be a bit big for front pocket but hell it is $14.95. If I don't like it, i will recycle it.

Thinking about sharks
Sharks are a fact of life for surfers. Being in Hawaii this week I have been thinking about sharks quite a bit. There have been a number of schemes to prevent shark attacks on surfers, here comes the latest: Geeky Rare-Earth Magnets Repel Sharks. Unfortunately the magnets only have a range of 10 inches and the polarity has to be lined up right. The weight would probably not be good for a surfboard, but I wouldn't doubt there are products coming. Maybe just surf booties since feet are the tasty morsels dangling down most of the time.

Where surfing is illegal
My friend Jeff Canin is down in Recife, Brazil where they have outlawed surfing due to the large number of great white, hammerhead and bull shark attacks. Ouch.

Bankruptcy shakes the surf industry
Last week the surf world: Surfline | WHAT'S NEXT was shocked by the closure of Clark Foam. Clark Foam makes an estimated 60-70% of the foam blanks that are the raw materials of shapers to make surfboards. This is a HUGE hit to a very small industry. There have been runs on surfboards and talk of a shortage. This is an unfortunate imposition of business reality on the normally idilic world of surfing. I am glad I stocked up last year!
