Microsoft remote desktop software a treat
I have been tinkering with VNC, IP Dynamics, and other remote desktop/VPN types of clients for quite some time. JohnLu suggested that I look at Working Remotely with Windows XP since it was free with XP Pro. So over the weekend i did. Got the server configured correctly I thought. Then tried to get the web client to work (as the help file suggested). I never could get it to work. I talked to John this morning and found out that there is in fact a Remote Desktop client under start/communications. Not in two hours of reading the Microsoft helpfiles was this mentioned. Microsoft helpfiles still suffer from the fundamental problem that they are written to explain functions and not to solve user problems. They can explain what every menu option does, but not how or when or why you might want to use any of them.
Now that I got it working, it is a breeze. Just type in password and I have full desktop control of my RAID machine in the basement. Now I can set it off to do things from three stories up. Nice trick... And FREE as part of Windows!

Couldn't agree more, and Microsoft is not the only one guilty of this...most technology product help files have this tendency...
and this tradition seems now to be continued onto the web...trying to figure out how to put up a simple RSS feed on a blog is mind-numbing skipping around exercise on the Typepad and Feedburner web-sties.
Indeed, the only places that really seem to be of HELP, are the forum sites, where users help other users out...but even that takes a ton of time wading through multiple forums threads, not to mention the constant logging in, logging out exericse...
ah well, nobody said technology was easy, just fun when it all eventually does work.

also, could you put up the steps you used to get it to work?
It would be very helpful...thanks.

RD for windows is decent. Its alot faster than most solutions because of how its built into a lower level in the system. Personally I like Ultr@VNC because it has bandwidth controlls, and built in file transfers. (I have a machine that I use only for File server and I use VNC to administrate it. Also its nice to be able to transfer a file using VNC off network using a hole punched in the firewall.)
