A vision for a new music model

My friend Gerd Leonard has published a paper with his vision on the future of the music business. Basically he is advocating a move back to music as a service. There is more dreaming and "should be" than "will be" here, but interesting reading.

Thorougly enjoyed Gerd's article...

The music industry's worries are reminiscent of the thoughts back in 1994-1997 about how the availability of information online would have a detrimental effect on book retailers. Of course this proved incorrect, instead showing that information begets the desire for more information. As Gerd infers in "The Future of Music", the access to more music for less money will mean a trend toward greater consumption.

On a less relevant and more sociological note, it is interesting that in the history of music the emphasis was the activity of music (i.e., like the work songs of sailors to keep rhythm or workers in the field passing the time, or conveying stories as an oral tradition like the Odyssey), and the muse-ic service was of a temporal sort in the mind of listeners. In this sense the oral tradition style of music had more elements of meaning, and the memory/imagination was much more involved.

I am now torn between the idea of musical imagination being bolstered by greater consumption, or being rendered as a passive listener of the music formulas...?
